Puzzle #59 - Cavallini & Co - Vintage National Parks - 1000 pieces

Puzzle #59 - Cavallini & Co - Vintage National Parks - 1000 pieces

Excited about this one!  First time with this company.  Liking the pieces (sturdy and good image quality).  But didn't pay attention that it is a portrait style so too big for my puzzle board.  I think (hope) I have figured out how to make it work - used a 22x28 poster board laid down over the puzzle board.  Says puzzle is 22x28 so will go edge to edge.  But it seems like it will keep things together better than trying to go off the top edge of the puzzle board.  (tried that and it felt like it was a bad idea...)  :)

I'm very much enjoying this puzzle.  Realized I have a few more portrait style puzzles I'm going to want to do so ordered a puzzle mat that can be used (a bit sturdier than the poster board I am using for this one).  The pieces are quality and the images are good although it is actually quite challenging.  Several things look quite similar so it takes a bit of detection to figure out which section a piece goes to.  (for some, especially the red/rust/brown ones)  I do like this company so will try to get more, but when I looked online they are about 90% portrait view.  Thus, the new puzzle mat that is coming soon.  :)

Paired with Stag's Leap Chardonnay.  :)  Nicely done.  :)

SO enjoyable!  I do apparently like collages - but not every single time.  However, when I work on a collage I always have a good time and never have to hammer anything out.  I guess that is the whole nature of collages, isn't it?  No big expanses you have to figure out. The bear was the trickiest part but wasn't bad in any way.  Just kind of normal concentrated hard.  The browns/rusts/reds were a mix and also the blues... so good challenge.  But nothing at all frustrating.  It allowed me to enjoy looking at the images and thinking about all the National Parks I have visited (and are depicted here) and several that I have yet to visit (that are depicted here) that are now up high on my list!!  :)  Acadia National Park in Maine, Yosemite and Sequoia and Glacier, too.  I really should add the Everglades to my list - even though I typically just want to head west from here. :)  Super fun puzzle and will definitely get more from Cavallini & Co.   Pieces are Ribbon Cut, sturdy and Interlocking - and very minimal puzzle dust.

Paired with Stags Leap Napa Valley 2020 Chardonnay - VERY good.

Puzzle #58 - Bits & Pieces - Welcome Home to Lambertville - 300 pieces

Puzzle #58 - Bits & Pieces - Welcome Home to Lambertville - 300 pieces

This was in that set of puzzles that had the famous 300 piece that nearly broke me earlier this year (when I was just beginning puzzles).  Doing this one today I can understand why!!  It isn't just the wonky shaped pieces (which I am way more used to now and don't mind as much)... it is primarily the image itself.  While lovely to look at, the whole darn thing is SO indistinct!!  There is no definition on anything!  It makes the image nearly unrecognizable except (maybe) by color.  THAT is what is bad about these puzzles.

Too bad... I do love the images but I know more now and would never order anything of any size that looks like this.  Nuts and bolts - the pieces are solid, thick, fit together extremely well.  No puzzle dust.  Nicely made puzzle.  But you have to be willing to have a completely vague image to be happy with Ruane Manning's puzzles.

Puzzle #57 - Springbok - Blissful Borough - 1000 pieces

Puzzle #57 - Springbok - Blissful Borough - 1000 pieces

So this one, sadly, turned into a real disappointment.  Ironically, I think I knew that was going to happen.  (I mean, look at all those trees and sky and pavement!!)  I chose it to begin and then almost immediately had second thoughts.  I wasn't even finished turning all the pieces over when I considered putting it back in the box.  Then again, when I took that first update photo, I thought, this is going to not be much fun and almost put it away.  But each time I talked myself into continuing.

To it's credit, parts of it WERE fun.  The houses turned out to be very fun and challenging - not frustrating.  The fact that Springbok uses larger pieces certainly made this possible.  I think it would have ALL been awful if it had been the smaller pieces like the Hennessy puzzle.  And the pavement turned out to not be bad.  Even the sky was not as bad as expected.  But oh, the trees.  ugh.  What a chore.  Awful.  Not fun at all!  And because of the wonky random shaped pieces, you can't just sort by shape and hammer it out.  Literally up to the last 3 pieces I was still struggling (granted it was almost 1:00 am - I was NOT going to bed until I had finished the doggone thing!) ha!

Sooooo.... I still love Springbok, but need to remember to avoid so many trees.  Terrible stuff.  Note - it was all made worse by the fact that there is no poster.  I simply can't see the image on the box well enough to distinguish anything.  I could tell the trees were different and there would be clues with the branches and leaves, but I could not see them.  My old eyes but also, just a box image.  Why won't they put nice sized posters in with puzzles???  Masterpieces and Buffalo have EVERYONE beat on this feature.  It makes a puzzle so much more enjoyable to be able to SEE the image and then distinguish between areas - like trees.  Good will is worth a lot of money... companies should consider this.

The Story of Arthur Truluv

The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg
Read August 2022 - Zoom Reading Circle

I loved this book!  I seem to be enjoying books with older protagonists lately (The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett, The Music of Bees, The Thursday Murder Club...)  This was a lovely story about a man in his 80's who has recently lost his wife.  Every day he makes his lunch, climbs on a city bus and goes to the cemetery to visit her.  He also interacts with her 'neighbors' in the cemetery - stopping by various headstones and imagining their lives based on the information carved on them.  I can relate to that, actually.  There is something about the stories represented in a cemetery that makes me want to know more.  There is a line near the end of the book that I thought was powerful.

"She stands and looks out over the acres of land.  All the lives.  All the whispering she hears!  It really is true that cemeteries are busy places.  I lived!  I lived!  I lived!"

Arthur's life is pretty simple until he meets a troubled young lady teenager named Maddy.  When Maddy becomes pregnant she turns to Arthur for help.  Together with Arthur's neighbor, Lucille, they create their own family of support and encouragement.  They all discover how much they really need one another - and how family can be chosen.

This wasn't a book with a climax or a twist of any kind.  This book was a journey... a journey with a dear friend.  I grew to love Arthur, Maddy and Lucille.  Yes, there are things in this book that are a bit too cliche, but sometimes that is exactly what you need to read.  This was a wonderful feel-good book.

I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars.  Zoom Reading Circle rated it 4.4 stars.

There were so many poignant lines in this book that I loved....

“Arthur realizes that if he were alone, it would be a grim wait.  With the girl, it is an adventure.  That’s what being with another does.  He remembers how with something like a full-body flush, he remembers what it means to share something with someone, the particular alchemy that can light things up.”

“Arthur thinks that, above all, aging means the abandonment of criticism and the taking on of compassionate acceptance.  He sees that as a good trade.”

“She herself is only eighty-three, only four years out of her seventies: think of all she can do!”

“People who don’t feel cared for are not always comfortable being cared for.”

“Oh Arthur, no one even sees you when you get old except for people who knew you when you were young.”

“Here’s what she knows:  He’ll forgive her.”

“The recipe may say add six egg whites, but what Lucille always thinks about any instruction in any recipe is: We’ll see about that.”

Puzzle #56 - Hennessy - The Joy of Reading - 1000 pieces

Puzzle #56 - Hennessy - The Joy of Reading - 1000 pieces

Think this is going to be a hard one!  I do like the border of (what I assume are) book quotes.  Nice touch.  :)  Can sort of help solve, but it often so small and blurry that it is hard (although you can spot that, too)  :)  So far good quality pieces, mostly.  One little tip end is about to pop off, but that is all.  Love the image.  We will see how it goes!

Poster

This was a fun puzzle and quite challenging, especially at the end.  The last one I did was The Bookworm upper left.  That took quite awhile!  The pieces overall are small on this puzzle - but that is relative to what I usually do - not to other 1000 piece puzzles, necessarily.  I just like larger pieces - easier for my fingers to hold and easier to see.  But the pieces were overall quite solid and went together well.  I could move a few pieces at a time (unlike most White Mountain puzzles).  I loved the theme of this puzzle.  And enjoyed the Hennessy brand (my first time with them).  I bought a few other of their puzzles so will look forward to completing them as well.

This was a close up to show how that one wonky piece - that seemed like it could break off - was sticking out into the space for the next piece.  But once I tucked it in and put the other piece in, all was well.  Just imagine that first piece won't hold up well.  It was the only one like that, though.
