An American in Scotland

An American in Scotland by Lucy Connelly

A Scottish Isle Mystery #1

This was enjoyable.  Not a ‘great’ book, but a fun one.  I would read the next in the series, for sure.  Of course, I love any book that takes place in Scotland - or at least will give it more leeway!  :)

The book introduces us to Dr. Emilia McRoy, an American doctor who has recently transplanted to Sea Isle, Scotland to begin a new life.  She is excited about ‘small town Scottish’ life and ready for a quiet existence so when she comes across a dead body it is definitely not what she envisioned.  She discovers that she is not only the town physician but also the coroner so the investigation, at least partially, falls in her lap.  She begins to dig into the pasts of the deceased and other villagers, realizing that there are many connections and stories hidden in this small town.  The local policeman, Ewan Campbell, is also the Laird and the person who arranged for Emilia to move to Sea Isle.  As she continues her investigation she realizes that she may not be able to trust anyone in the town until she discovers who the killer is.

Listening to this one was fun because of the Scottish accent - done reasonably well by the narrator Kimberly Wetherell.

I rated this book a 4.  Reading Circle rated it 3.8.

#1 in the John Corey series

Well... this was quite the book!  ha!  I listened to it on audiobook and I think that might have been better overall than reading it in print form.  The main character is a real letch and a guy that I would despise in real life.  However, as a woman, particularly a woman ‘of a certain age’, I certainly have met guys like John Corey.  He undresses every woman he meets in his mind, has a lot more confidence about his ability to ‘bed them’ than perhaps he should (although this is written by a man so the confidence probably is accurate since the author can make anything happen in those pages.)  He is foul mouthed, sarcastic, unhelpful, and just generally full of himself.  At the beginning of the book you know where this will go in some general terms... he will end up in the ocean, probably in a storm, and the injuries that he is still in recovery from will be a problem.  (note - that was close to the fact of what happened, although not exact)

From the start of the book I pictured John Corey played by Bruce Willis.  A mixture of his David character from Moonlighting and his character in Die Hard.  I could tell the era this book was written in, down to the frequent descriptions of shoes with no socks, jackets over t-shirts, and etc.  The story itself was intriguing enough, although again, it wasn’t too hard to get the general idea of how it was going to go... it was then just a matter of getting through the specifics of the plot.  While the book annoyed me in many ways, I will admit that I found myself, once or twice, thinking ‘I sure would like to go listen to my audiobook now...’  Go figure.  :)

The premise...

John Corey is an NYPD detective who is convalescing at his uncles Long Island home after nearly being killed by two assailants who shot him three times and got away.  He is wary and watchful but gets drawn into the investigation of the murders of a couple who had befriended him during his summer on the island.  Even though there are local police, FBI, and CIA there, John Corey is the only one who spots certain clues and begins to get a clearer picture of what is really going on.  (sigh)  He is also sexist, uncooperative, disruptive and rude to the lead detective, who happens to be a female (that he undresses with his eyes upon first meeting).  But of course, everyone values his insights and wants him to work the case with them as a consultant.  There are twists and turns as we find out more about what Tom and Judy Gordon (the murdered couple) were up to.  The end of the book had some gore that caught me off guard... I don’t care for that stuff.  Again, I pictured this as a movie with Bruce Willis and somehow that made it easer to stomach.  But I would not have chosen this on my own to read.  It was a Zoom Reading Circle selection.  Doubt I would read any more in this series, although, giving credit to the author, the characters have stayed with me a bit.  It was also a super long book - like 600 pages/ 19 hours audio version long.  At the end I had it sped up to about 1.8.

There were a couple of lines that I would have highlighted had I been reading it, but since I was listening to it in my car when I heard those lines, I can’t even remember what they were - no real way to take notes.  Oh well.  I am confident they weren’t THAT good.  ;)

Ah!  Found one that I had taken note of on Amazon...

I’ll tell you, the older you get, the more baggage you have to carry, and the less you’re able to lift it.

I rated this book a 3.  Reading Circle pretty much felt the same way as me and rated it a 2.6.  That is probably more like it.  :)

Puzzle #62 - House of Puzzles - Mine's a Pint - 500 pieces

Puzzle #62 of 2023
Finished October 29, 2023

I have been wanting this puzzle for awhile!  And a few other HOP images, too.  I finally bit the bullet and ordered from a puzzle shop in Great Britain - paying the full shipping cost to get them here.  And it was worth it!  I'm so happy with my new puzzles!  This was a very enjoyable puzzle and quite tricky, really!  Much more difficult than most other 500 piece puzzles.  The challenge was great and made this wonderful image stay with me longer than most 500 piece puzzles.  They advertise unusual pieces and they definitely have some.  That wouldn't be a real draw for me, but I don't mind them.  They were probably part of how it was trickier, instead of making it easier.

I was hopeful when I opened the box and saw a thick paper folded up but turns out it was just advertisement for their other puzzles.  I am fine with that, but throw in a poster while you are at it!  :)

The box is thin which is really nice for storage and environment.

Everything about this was a good experience, I would say.  And oh, I would love to  be hanging out in that pub!

Puzzle #61 - Otter House - The Book Shop - 1000 pieces

Puzzle #61 of 2023

This is my very first Otter House puzzle.  I ordered this in one of my overseas British orders of puzzles and was so excited to receive it.  I love it!  First, there is a huge poster, which makes me feel SO GOOD about a puzzle company right off the bat!  The pieces are not terribly thick and strong, but they don't feel flimsy either.  So all is well there.  The image is fun and so far the pieces have been clear.  Not off color or tint, but very much what they look like in the image.  I appreciate that, too.

I love this particular image - with just a glimpse of the person walking past the door in the purple coat, the dog just entering the doorway, the cat taking it all in - the man looking in the window at the book display... and the overall beauty of a friendly neighborhood bookstore (what a dream!)   :)  I look forward to doing more Otter House puzzles for sure! They would be well worth ordering from Great Britain for!  Also of note, eco friendly box and packaging and a first for me, the inside paper bag that held the puzzle pieces has information on how to return for a replacement if missing a piece.  Very clear and specific instructions.  Kind of nice, really.

I am really enjoying this puzzle!  So much fun!  I keep forgetting to take update photos.  :)  But it is something I look forward to sneaking a few moments to work on...

This one was truly just pure fun!  My first by this company (Otter House) and now I really want to find more from them.  They are a British puzzle company so that probably won't be easy... but I'll keep my eyes open.  I bought one other so still have one in my stash.  That is good.  :)  The colors were clear, the pieces were a bit thin, but not a problem at all.  The pieces fit together well and I did have some tricky mis-fits but more a challenge - not a frustration.  LOVED the big poster that was folded in half at the bottom of the box.  That also allows for a smaller overall puzzle box which I appreciate - better for storage and for environment.  Definitely a favorite puzzling experience!

Puzzle #60 - Gibsons - Woodland Seasons Autumn - 500 pieces

Puzzle #60 of 2023

I love this set of 4 puzzles from Gibsons.  One for each season of the year.  I had hoped to do the summer one this past summer but never had time.  The autumn one was great fun.  Already looking forward to that winter scene!  :)  Gibsons puzzles are always high quality, although sometimes they do have a piece that is damaged.  There was one such piece in this grouping but it fit into the puzzle okay.  I should have taken an individual photo of it but was too busy enjoying putting the puzzle together.  :)  I admit I don't know what everything listed and shown on this puzzle even is... for instance, what is a Xanthia Moth?  It is always interesting to see the things depicted.  Enjoyable puzzling experience and you learn something!  :)

Puzzle #59 - Cobble Hill - Trolley Station - 500 pieces

This was a pleasant puzzle.  Fun, fairly easy, engaging.  Love the colors and the image.  Had been wanting to get this one for a long time.  Finally saw it was being discontinued and on sale, so timing was perfect.  I enjoy Cobble Hill and the random cut pieces.  This puzzle is oversized for a 500 piece puzzle so really fills up my jumbo sized puzzle board.  But I am good with that.  :)  Poster is not much larger than the box, but I still prefer to have a poster.

Puzzle #58 - eeBoo - The Alchemist's Home - 1000 pieces

Puzzle #58 of 2023

Fun puzzle!  Love the image.  Fun to look at all the details in the house - each room had something interesting.  Loved seeing the Alchemist lady in so many different scenes.  Is she a ghost?  Some seem clear and some seem more 'otherworldly'.

This puzzle went together well.  The pieces fit very loosely, but they do match up well (not many mis-fits really).  Shiny finish but bright and colorful.  Not terribly challenging but quite fun.  Again, it arrived in a recyclable bag and I love that the artist shares their curated Spotify playlist to go along with the puzzle.  Fun feature!
